Marine corporal from Kasson, Minn., had inaugural guard duty

Jeff and Cindy Bernards of Kasson, Minn., were surprised to see their son on national television Monday during the inauguration broadcast.

Marine Cpl. Adam Bernards, standing straight and tall, was on guard duty as President Obama and his family emerged from the White House, on their way to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony and speech.

Jeff Bernards told KTTC-TV:

"Adam and his fellow Marine came out and they stood by the door. And then when the president came out they both saluted prior to even knowing the president was there. In other words they knew he was coming out. And so I texted him and asked him, 'How did you know the president was going to be there?' And he says, 'Well we have eyes in the back of our heads, dad.'"

The 21-year-old corporal has worked at the White House for a year; he entered the Marines after graduation from Kasson-Mantorville High School.
