North Dakota finishes election tally — from last November

The North Dakota State Canvassing Board finalized the election tally for the governor and U.S. Senate races last week, six months after the November election.

The action came after federal election officials notified the state that Walsh County had 300 more votes cast than the number of voters, reports the Fargo Forum.

The outcome was unchanged from the results reported last year, but U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp lost 174 votes and Gov. Jack Dalrymple gained one.

The paper said the apparent source of the problem was that "a Grafton precinct ran out of ballots and had to make copies. Since the copied ballots could not be electronically scanned, they were hand-counted and believed to have been entered by hand into the voting system twice."

Secretary of State Al Jaeger's explanation: Human error happens.
