White Bear Lake hopes to become home of the world's longest ice-cream sundae Thursday, when volunteers scoop up 1,000 feet of ice cream and toppings in an effort to raise money for the Relay for Life cancer fund.
Former Gov. Arne Carlson, along with local officials, will be on hand as the city tries to break the record currently held by Cavalier, N.D.: 670 feet, set last year. Carlson is scheduled to officially measure the sundae.
The effort will come during the city's downtown Marketfest celebration, and 1,000 feet of tables will be set up along 4th Street to accommodate 212 gallons of vanilla ice cream, about 3,700 cherries, 110 cans of whipped cream, 109 1.5-pint containers of strawberries and 218 bottles of chocolate and caramel topping.
They plan to start assembly about 7:30 p.m. and expect to take six or seven minutes to build it, and then they'll hand out portions to those in the crowd.
