Minnesota employers added 8,400 jobs in May, and the state's unemployment rate remained at 5.3 percent, state officials said Thursday.
That's better than the national unemployment rate of 7.6 percent in May.
DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben said in a statement:
"Last month's figures add to the mounting evidence of a broad-based economic recovery in Minnesota. Every major industrial sector has added jobs in the past 12 months, and the state's unemployment rate remains at a five-year low."
The state has added 43,300 jobs over the past year, officials said.
The May report showed these changes by industry sector:
- Leisure and hospitality (up 2,900 jobs)
- Government (up 2,800)
- Professional and business services (up 2,000)
- Education and health services (up 1,800)
- Other services (up 1,100)
- Construction (up 1,000)
- Manufacturing (up 100)
- Financial activities (up 100)
- Trade, transportation and utilities (down 2,600)
- Information (down 700)
- Mining and logging (down 100).
