State and federal officials announced Friday grants of $3 million to help clean up the St. Louis River in the Duluth area.
The money — $2.19 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and $1.1 million from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency through the Minnesota Clean Water Fund — will be used to assess clean-up options on the river, assess the amount of contaminated sediments to be removed and develop engineering designs for clean-up work.
The St. Louis River is among the most polluted waterways in the Great Lakes region.
