There's no sudden new thought but, brick by brick, he builds a compelling logical explanation for the fiscal cliff moment in Washington based around the premise that what we are seeing is the end of the road that Republicans have been traveling for 30 years, which, according to this telling, was supposed to lead to the end of the welfare state. Only it didn't.
